Case History – Impregnating system



BRIEFING
The briefing includes the design of a system for the automatic impregnation of cloths for professional cleaning various environments (offices, hospitals, hotels). The main requirements were:

– regulation of the amount of detergent liquid dispensed to optimize and reduce consumption;

– elimination of the preparatory phase of the cloths for cleaning, and automation of the impregnation process in order to reduce working time;

– ergonomic facilitation of the actions to be performed;

– ease of cleaning the article.



 

CONCEPT STUDY
Working closely with the client to analyse in detail the article’s context of use to develop the first conceptual sketches of the system. All aspects relating to the functionality, structure and shape of the selected concept are then explored.




MECHANICAL STUDY
The functional core is optimized in terms of size, quantity of liquid dispensed, number and cost of components, and assembly; subsequently it is prototyped and retested. Prototype verification is essential for an article whose functionality will guarantee its success.




FIRST FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPE
The functional core underpinning the entire system is prototyped and tested very quickly. The validity of the concept is confirmed, and foundations are laid for design development. The basic concept consists of a chamber containing cleaning liquid, which is discharged into a tray by means of a lever. The cloth is placed in the tray to moisten.




DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
The components of the entire machine are further defined, taking into account ergonomic and cleaning issues. In addition, some aspects of industrialization, such as the number of components and their size, become key at this stage, as they will determine the article’s final cost.




PROTOTYPE
The entire article is prototyped so its functionality, aesthetic details, and possible difficulties in assembly and/or use can be examined in depth. The article is definitively approved.





INDUSTRIALIZATION
The article is definitively industrialized. All details are optimized for production; most components will be made using injection moulding, others with blow moulding, and others will be supplied externally. All components, made of different plastic materials, must match perfectly to guarantee a professional appearance, maximum cleaning, and watertight seals.




FINISHED PRODUCT
The product is a machine that allows the dispensing of an adjustable amount of liquid detergent for the impregnation of cloths to be used for cleaning floors in various types of environments.
