Case History: NEXUS Chair – Industrial design

CONCEPT DESIGN

The first activity is the concept design, which involves producing SKETCHES and AESTHETIC DRAFTS that will dictate the guidelines for the article. The next step is analysis of the article’s functional and structural needs, which will be given an aesthetic look in line with regulatory criteria.




DESIGN AND 3D MODELLING
Taking into account the details of the usage and safety regulations, which represent mechanical constraints, modelling of the article in line with the dimensions and aesthetics previously defined begins.
In this phase the article is defined geometrically, and any inconsistencies between the proposed style and mechanical requirements are identified. For this reason, any compromises and/or differences from the pictorial representation in sketches must be discussed with the working group.
 The ergonomics required for a two-piece shell to be produced in galvanized sheets are also studied.

 




STRUCTURAL DESIGN
The structural support system is designed using a main frame, initially designed with a reinforcing rod. Subsequently, all variants of the tube and die-cast frames for the bench version are designed.



FIRST PROTOTYPE PHASE
A first sheet metal prototype is built on a rod to verify the anchoring system of the first on the second.
In the prototype phase the design is subject to a real, PHYSICAL CHECK.
Sheet metal prototypes are produced of all newly designed components.
The chair’s aesthetics, functionality and assembly are verified.
This is the most important verification phase because the working group plans any changes and adjustments necessary for the product’s functional optimization and the improvement of the industrial parameters and equipment construction specifications.



VERSION DEVELOPMENT OF RANGE
Taking into account the details of all the safety and usage regulations that represent mechanical constraints, modelling of the article in line with the dimensions and aesthetics previously defined begins.

For this reason, it is necessary to discuss with the working group any compromises and/or differences with respect to the pictorial representation in sketches.
Complete design of the chair by combining structure and ergonomics in various versions.


SECOND PROTOTYPE PHASE

The chair’s aesthetics, functionality and assembly are verified.
This is the most important verification phase because the working group plans any changes and adjustments necessary for the product’s functional optimization and the improvement of the industrial parameters and equipment construction specifications.



STACKING
Packaging analysis is crucial to define the article’s dimensions and stacking system; all key details for shipping and product positioning by retailers.



TRIAL
After the FIRST MOULD TEST, the product is assembled for verification. Sinking of the material occurs near the mop die, highlighting bleaching of the plastic.
It was decided to intervene via targeted variable thickness increases. The problem was thus solved.




SHEET METAL DEVELOPMENT
Study of the development of sheet metal for production with adjustment and control of the design corresponding to the effect of the folding action.
Design of the holes that will act to reduce the weight and enhance the graphic effect of the article.



STUDY OF AESTHETIC HOLES
The aesthetic proposals are prepared for holes in the back and seat that will give the chair a pleasing aesthetic design as well as eliminating unnecessary material.



FINAL PRODUCT
The tested end product is ready for sale. It is especially suitable for use in public areas.
